    3-D Shape and Transportation Project
    Due on Friday, February 9
    In our next science and math units, we will be learning about transportation modes as well as reviewing shapes and solids. In an effort to encourage students to explore and experiment the shapes in their world, they will be asked to build a transportation model.
    Requirements:
    1. Build a transportation model (bus, car, boat, airplane, etc…)
    2. ONLY use recycled 3-D shapes or solids (egg cartons, paper rolls, tissue boxes, etc…).
    3. Decorate the transportation model with any of the following items: stickers, aluminum foil, construction paper, paint, etc…
    4. Be able to describe the transportation model in French, and name all the shapes used to build it.

    One hundred days of school... already! We enjoyed making crafts to celebrateThe students loved the Mardi Gras Parade! The Valentines / Friendship exchange was also a big event! A big thanksuccess! The children enjoyed decorating their special crafts! Thank you also for all the delicious goodies that were sent out to our classroom volunteers! Also, thank you to all of you who assisted with the transportation project: we will be presenting each one, next week.teachers!
    Announcements:
    Valentine Day : No formal celebration of Valentine’s Day, per CMS policy. However, students are allowed give and receive treats. Send the treats by Monday, February 12th.
    MARDI GRAS Celebration: Tuesday, Feb. 13th at 1:30 PM. Students can change into their costume, immediately after lunch, in time for the parade.
    Report Cards: The Report Cards were sent home on Friday. Please, plan to come watchreturn, the children parade inside the school- very noisyPlastic Protective Sheet and fun!
    Rough Play, Bullying and Playground Incidents: Know
    the difference! Bullying RARELY happens in Kindergarten. Rough play, however, happens often, but culprits must sit out for 10 minutes, until they learnSigned Brown Card. All other documents are yours to play accordingkeep.

    TestingFebruary... already! This month will be continuing through the restbuzzing with activities: early release day, MAP testing, transportation projects and many fun celebrations (100th Day of the week. Although, it is not our favorite educational portion, it is encouraging to witness the growth of the children in five months.
    Many thanks to our volunteers who continue to brighten our school life!

    Third Quarter Objectives
    French Literacy
    1. Decoding / Word Recognition. Be able to read and say all letter names and sounds Aa / Zz.
    2. Decoding / Word Recognition: Read all complex sounds: “ou”, “oi”, “on”, “an”, “en”, “eu”, “ai”, “au”, “in”.
    3. Vocabulary: Name / read French nouns beginning with the letter of the week, theme vocabulary (weather/ animals/ outside activities…) adjectives and verbs.
    4. Phonemic Awareness: Beginning sound recognition; vowel and consonant blends; phoneme isolation, deletion and substitution; phoneme segmentation and blending; rhyme word recognition.
    5. Guided reading, independent reading, fluency development.
    6. Reading Fluency: Read short paragraphs with ease and understanding.
    7. Reading comprehension. Read and draw what is read. Be able to respond to the “WH” questions (Who/What/Where/When/Why)
    8. Spelling and Writing: Weekly spelling words (frequency and sight words). Phonetically correct spelling.
    Sentence Structures: “c’est…”; “Il /elle… » ; « J’ai… » ; « J’aime… » ; « Je peux… ».
    Use of correct punctuation (Capitalization of first letter of a sentence followed by lower-case-letters, period…).
    Descriptive phonetic (inventive) writing.
    9. Listening Comprehension: Understanding and responding to questions (Who, Where, What, How, Why). Describe a picture, using adjectives and verbs.
    10. Book and Print Awareness: Front and Back recognition, author and illustrator, beginning of the book, beginning of a sentence, words in a sentence, punctuation, title identification and purpose.
    11.Understand the differences between a fiction and non-fiction text.
    Mathematics:
    1. Number Sense: Number recognition 1 to 20 and French number words 1 to 20.
    2. Number sense: Number writing 1 to 20.
    3. Number Sense: Rote Counting in French to at least 75, by 1 and by 10.
    4. Number Sense: Counting quantities to at least 20, and be able to match them.
    5. Number Sense: Comparing quantities (more, less, equal).
    6. Place Value: Ones and Tens. Count how many groups of tens? How many ones.
    7. Problem Solving: Composing / decomposing numbers, addition and (subtraction) facts from 3 to 10. Showing word problems with manipulatives.
    8. Addition and Subtraction fluency up to 5: know the fact families (3+2=5 / 4-2= 2/…)
    9. Graphing and Data: Group graphing (weather, favorite things, etc…).
    10.Geometry: 3-D Geometric solids: French names, shape recognition, attributes, comparing, manipulation and building cubes, cones, pyramids and cylinders. Ongoing activities with triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids and rhombus.
    11. Algebra: Patterns: Create and Extend repeating patterns (AB, ABB, AAB, ABC, AABBCC, etc…), recognition of pattern unit; color, shape; words; movement; etc…
    12. Sorting by various categories (shapes, colors, size, etc…).
    13. Measurement: Calendar concept understanding activities; concept and French names of months and seasons; measuring activities with non-standard units. Measurement of time.

    I hope you enjoyed those extra few days of “snow-cation” and the fun that comes with winter activities! Now that we are officially starting the third quarter, the objectivesTesting will be slightly more demanding. The next few weeks will probably be some ofcontinuing through the most challenging and enriching timesrest of the year, mostly dueweek. Although, it is not our favorite educational portion, it is encouraging to witness the absencegrowth of breaks. We will make the most of it!children in five months.
